"Cancer treatment is so complex that one size does not fit all. Our focus is on taking care of the whole person. While our primary discipline is medical oncology, we also provide consultations for a range of complementary therapies which, for some people, may promote comfort and healing." Dr. Ben Chue is a medical oncologist at the Seattle Cancer and Wellness Center. Before joining Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Dr. Chue gained experience at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the University of Washington Cancer Center and Virginia Mason Hospital as a fellow in oncology, with extensive experience in medical oncology, hematology and bone marrow transplantation. His internal medicine residency was at the University of Washington, and he earned his M.D. degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He is also a graduate of Yale University, with a degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry. Dr. Chue has conducted research in immunology, molecular biology, and nutrition and cancer at Yale University, the University of California at San Francisco, the National Institutes of Health, Rockefeller University, and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Chue came to the Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center in 1998 and is one of two board-certified medical oncologists on staff. His current focus is on innovative approaches to certain difficult-to-treat cancers: pancreatic, metastatic melanoma, and relapsed lymphoma and leukemia. Dr. Chue has been a pioneer in the use of low-dose, or “metronomic” chemotherapy, which effectively fights tumors while drastically reducing the often debilitating side effects of traditional chemotherapy. Long before other clinicians, he offered promising, leading-edge treatments, including Herceptin for early-stage aggressive breast cancers (1999) and targeted therapy with the smart drug Rituxan for aggressive lymphoma. Dr. Chue is board-certified in both internal medicine and medical oncology. A graduate of Yale University with a degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry, his internal medicine residency was at the University of Washington. He received his doctorate at the University of California at San Francisco. He is a clinical instructor at the UW School of Medicine and has worked at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the University of Washington Cancer Center and Virginia Mason Medical Center as a fellow in oncology. Dr. Chue has extensive experience in hematology and bone marrow transplants as well. He has conducted research in immunology, molecular biology, nutrition and cancer at Yale University, the University of California at San Francisco, the National Institute of Health, Rockefeller University and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Ben Chue is a pioneer in the use of low-dose chemotherapy, also known as "metronomic dosing". He is always searching for more effective treatments with fewer side-effects for his patients, many of whom have advanced-stage cancers. Long before most other oncologists, Ben developed breakthrough treatments that are now considered standard, including: Herceptin for early stage aggressive breast cancers. His expertise is innovative approaches to certain difficult-to-treat cancers: pancreatic, brain, metastatic melanoma and relapsed lymphoma and leukemia. In 2006, details of his promising new treatment for late-stage pancreatic cancer were published in the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. A clinical trial is currently underway testing the new protocol. Click here to read the abstract. "Dr. Chue never gives up and is willing to seek out new methods of treatment instead of only relying on the tried and true standards," says Aaron Barrett, a pancreatic cancer patient who credits Ben with saving his life in 2005. Ben is board certified in medical oncology and a clinical instructor at the UW School of Medicine. He graduated from Yale University with a degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry and received his doctorate of medicine degree at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Washington, and his fellowship in medical oncology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the University of Washington Cancer Center and Virginia Mason Medical Center. Ben came to Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center in 1998, becoming one of the first medical oncologists anywhere to work in a team that includes naturopathic oncologists, practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and mind-body medicine social workers. "The patient gets the best of two worlds here," he says. "Medical oncology is our platform for treatment, supported by scientifically-based measures like nutrition, naturopathy, mind-body medicine, acupuncture, and spiritual wellness. We offer our patients the full range of cancer-fighting tools from both conventional and complementary medicine."
